House fire in Baton Rouge leaves 7 people displaced

Seven people have been displaced following a fire at a home on Sherwood Street in Baton Rouge. According to the Baton Rouge Fire Department, the fire began just after 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, at the home on Sherwood Street near North Foster Drive. When firefighters got to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the home. All of the people inside of the home escaped to safety before firefighters arrived. Most of the flames were in the back bedroom, and firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the home. However, the rest of the home suffered heavy smoke and water damage. An investigator is still working to determine what caused the fire. The Red Cross was called to assist the displaced residents.

Shreveport Fire Station 14 relocation progressing

With the recent passing of the 2024 Shreveport bond proposals, Shreveport Fire Chief Clarence Reese recently gave an update on one of the projects from the 2021 bond, which includes the relocation of Fire Station 14. That bond put $2.9 million towards the new fire station. The fire station is being built one building over from the current station on Greenwood Road. “It is being built, there are walls up, concrete has been laid,” said Reese. “It will be one fire station and one medic unit.” This location will allow for future expansions as the population increases in the area. Reese says the new station replaces one that has become outdated and inefficient for response times, quality care, and proper storage of units. On top of building a new station, Reese talks about a new feature being added.

Fire chief says cause of house fire in Shreveport is suspicious

The cause of a fire Thursday afternoon that destroyed a two-story house and garage is suspicious, Fire Chief Clarence Reese said. It took 40 firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control at the house in the 300 block of Boulevard Street. The house was vacant, and no utilities were connected, Reese said. “So, suspicious in nature for us. And, of course, it's the middle of the day. Nobody was seen running from the home or anything else for it to just up and go in flames. To go up in flames just out of the blue is immediately going to be suspicious in nature for us,” Reese said. Firefighters received the call just before 1 p.m. The flames started in a detached garage and spread to the house. The first unit was on the scene within 3 minutes of the call.
