Fire in Benton County serves as a warning about controlled burning

On Saturday afternoon, officials urged residents about responsible burning after a cover fire near a hill on I-82 on Gibbon Road and Yakitat Rd spread across 20 acres of land. According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, deputies arrived to support firefighters from Benton County Fire District 2 in containing a cover fire. BCFD 2 claims the fire started when the wind caused a controlled burn to become unruly and spread. The fire was completely under control by 2:15 p.m. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from traveling up the hill and causing any homes or buildings in the area to catch fire. BCSO issued a reminder to consider weather conditions before creating a controlled burn. Benton County Fire District 1 underscored this message by later posting a "NO BURN DAY' notification with an exception made for agriculture property permit holders.
