Firefighters rescued a woman from an apartment fire in New Haven on Thursday evening.
Deputy Chief Dan Coughlin said the fire broke out at 341 Smith Ave. It started on the second floor and spread to the third floor.
One elderly woman was rescued and transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
All other occupants got out of the apartment on their own, fire officials said. The American Red Cross said it helped 11 adults and eight children.
Red Cross volunteers said they distributed comfort kits that contained personal care supplies. They also provided information to help with cleanup, notification of important contacts, the handling of damaged items, and more.
Red Cross caseworkers said they will connect with those affected in the coming days to develop a longer-term recovery plan.

VIDEOS: The full closure of Interstate 95 in Norwalk entered its second day on Friday after a three-vehicle crash and ensuing fire damaged an overpass.
Demolition began around 3 a.m. Friday morning.
Norwalk schools were closed on Friday due to traffic concerns. The interstate is expected to reopen on Monday morning at the earliest.
The closure is in place while crews demolish the Fairfield Avenue bridge. The bridge, which is less than a decade old, was severely damaged by the fire, which ignited directly underneath the structure.
Officials urged patience and suggested for anyone who can work from home to do so. Drivers are also asked to avoid all non-essential travel in the Norwalk area.
Drone video on Thursday showed the aftermath of the fire.

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: With its foam-spraying vehicle, a local speciality chemical company answered Norwalk Fire Department’s call for aid to help put out the massive fire caused by a tractor-trailer full of gasoline that was involved in a Thursday crash on Interstate 95.
Retired Norwalk Fire Captain Tim Morrissette received the call from his friend Ed McCabe, assistant chief-operations for Norwalk Fire Department, on his way to work at King Industries early Thursday morning.
“The vehicle is readily available for whenever it’s needed,” Morrissette explained. “Ed had given me a call… and I literally parked my vehicle and got in our quick response vehicle and headed to the highway, so under five minutes, we’re able to get the vehicle on scene.”
King Industries worked alongside Norwalk Fire to contain the fire using their foam-spraying technology.
