Firefighters rescued a woman from an apartment fire in New Haven on Thursday evening.
Deputy Chief Dan Coughlin said the fire broke out at 341 Smith Ave. It started on the second floor and spread to the third floor.
One elderly woman was rescued and transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
All other occupants got out of the apartment on their own, fire officials said. The American Red Cross said it helped 11 adults and eight children.
Red Cross volunteers said they distributed comfort kits that contained personal care supplies. They also provided information to help with cleanup, notification of important contacts, the handling of damaged items, and more.
Red Cross caseworkers said they will connect with those affected in the coming days to develop a longer-term recovery plan.
