VIDEO: Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay is typically a place for fun and thrills, but this week, it's helping save lives. First responders are using the Raging Rapids River ride at the park to simulate rushing water in the Ohio River or a flooded creek or stream. LMPD Dive Officer Chad Crick says the ride provides first responders with a unique training ground. The training teaches the first responders many skills, like how to flow down rapids, what to do when caught in a current, and how to rescue victims from dangerous water. Capt. Michael Renn of Louisville Fire and Rescue says, those skills are important to learn, but another big piece of this training is learning how the first responders themselves will react in these scenarios.
