After weeks in Paducah hospitals, a local tornado survivor is going home. Jim Douglas first spoke to us from a hospital bed inside Baptist Health Paducah on Dec. 16, just days after the Mayfield Consumer Products candle factory collapsed with him inside. The factory collapsed the night of Dec. 10 when an EF-4 tornado struck Mayfield, Kentucky. Douglas says he was trapped under the collapsed building for more than five hours, sustaining crush injuries and nerve damage. Talking with us in December, he recalled how teams of emergency crews, along with police, firefighters and volunteers, pried away the rubble that trapped and injured him before forming a human chain to carry him and others to safety. “There was human chain, one on the left side, one on the right, and it was our first responders, state troopers, police from all over the state,” he said.
