On Tuesday, the Paducah Board of Commissioners approved a grant application to FEMA for fire department funding. The Board unanimously approved a municipal order to allow the Paducah Fire Department to apply for a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant for $835,754.13. The funding would allow the fire department to hire three additional firefighters for three years. During the meeting, Fire Chief Steve Kyle spoke about the grant. "This increases our ability to put fully trained staff on to meet industry standards. It also reduces the probability of injuries on the fire ground from personnel trying to do too many tasks while they're operating on the fire ground," Kyle said. Mayor George Bray said if the application were approved, it would give the City time to evaluate the other problem areas at the Fire Department.
