Everyone safely evacuated a three-story Iowa City apartment building Thursday morning after a fire started in the kitchen of one of the units. Fire crews were called to an apartment complex at 1958 of Broadway Street at around 8:42 a.m. on Thursday, where they said they saw smoke coming from a third-floor window. The fire was found in the kitchen of one of the units, but officials did not say what caused the fire. Everyone had already safely evacuated the building by the time firefighters arrived. No one was injured. Officials estimated the damage at around $40,000. The fire remains under investigation.
