Fire in Cedar Rapids damages house, residents escape safely

An early morning fire damaged a house and garage. First responders in Linn County responded to a house fire just before 1:15 a.m. at 5180 Chestnut Ridge Road NE in Cedar Rapids, just south of Highway 100. Agencies included Linn County Deputies, Hiawatha Police, Fire and Ambulance, Cedar Rapids Fire, Monroe Fire, Robins Fire and Palo Fire. When they arrived, they found an attached garage fully engulfed in flames. The fire also spread from the garage to the inside of the house, causing severe fire and smoke damage. The five people who lived in the house were able to leave the home without any injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
