An employee housing building at Lake Crescent sustained heavy damage in a fire Tuesday night. Clallam District 2 Fire-Rescue reported that it responded to the call for a structure fire at Lake Crescent Lodge at 6:51 p.m. One of the employee housing four-plex units was on fire; the flames were reported spreading into trees and underbrush. The four-plex housing building sustained heavy damage to one unit. Two units were a total loss and one unit sustained very little damage. No one was in the building at the time of the fire. Assistant Chief Mike DeRousie said District 2 responded with 21 firefighters, two engines, a fast-attack brush rig, a medic unit and a command vehicle. At District 2's request, Fire District 4 from Joyce responded with a water tender and fire engine. Additionally, District 3 moved an engine and crew to Station 21 in the Gales Addition neighborhood to cover District 2 while its units were at Lake Crescent. Port Angeles Fire Department was also dispatched to the Lake Crescent fire but was canceled in mid-route because the fire was under control. Assistant Chief Mike DeRousie applauded the work of Lake Crescent workers on the scene who gathered fire extinguishers and tried to put the fire out before firefighters arrived. Two employees — night manager Dustin Humes and Bradwell Gardner — hooked up a fire hose to a hydrant and were able to put out the brush fire, DeRousie said. They also are credited with slowing the burning of the structure until firefighters arrived. Fire investigators could not immediately determine the cause of the fire.
