Kristen Thorstenson, a community resource specialist at Snohomish County Fire District 1, has been honored with a statewide award for her dedication and hard work in child passenger safety. The Washington Child Passenger Safety Program named Thorstenson as the outstanding child passenger safety technician instructor for 2015. Thorstenson teaches classes in Snohomish County and across the state. The award presenters noted Thorstenson “helps develop curriculum for our classes, participates in the creation of innovative programs and really has been the heart and soul of the program in our county.” There are more than 400 nationally certified car seat technicians in the State of Washington, each who passed a three to four day Child Passenger Safety Technician course and who meet recertification requirements every two years. The award presentation coincides with Child Passenger Safety Week from Sept. 13-19. This week is dedicated to teaching parents and caregivers about the importance of correct installation and use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts. Free child car seat checks will be offered by appointment on Friday, Sept. 18 at Fire District 1’s Mariner Fire Station, 12310 Meridian Ave. S., Everett (near Mariner High School).
