One man was injured after rescuing his kids from a fire at a duplex Monday night south of Everett, officials said. Crews responded to the blaze, in the 400 block of Center Road, at about 8 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames coming from the duplex, said Leslie Hynes of Snohomish County Fire District 1. The injured man was treated at the scene and then taken to Harborview Medical Center as firefighters went to work battling the flames. His condition was not immediately available, but Hynes said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. She said the man and four of his five children were home when the fire broke out. He got the children out safely, but was injured when he moved a burning mattress. A woman who lives in the adjacent duplex unit was able to escape without injury. Firefighters from Fire District 1, Everett and Lynnwood responded to the fire and had it under control within about 20 minutes. "They were able to keep most of the flames contained to the second floor of the duplex where the fire started," Hynes said. The second floor of the unit where the fire started was heavily damaged. The fire also damaged the balcony of the neighboring unit and firefighters had to pull down ceiling in both units to check for fire in the attic. Both units are now uninhabitable. Damage is estimated at $150,000. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents - a family of seven from the unit where the fire started and a family of four from the neighboring unit. Neither family has insurance. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
