Firefighters say nine people are displaced after a fire destroyed a home off South Naches Christmas morning.
Yakima firefighters say they arrived to a home in the 500 block of S. Naches around 5 a.m. Friday morning and found a two story home with its basement fully involved in fire. Crews worked to control the flames from the outside, and the fire began spreading to another home.
Crews say they were unable to enter the home because the advanced fire made it too unsafe. The house was demolished about two hours after firefighters arrived.
The nine people who were in the home are now displaced, crews say no one was injured. Firefighters say the residents in the home were all awoken by smoke alarms.
Fire officials say they are still investigating the cause of the fire, and arson is not ruled out at this time.
Crews say they were impressed by the smoke alarms in the home, and remind residents again of how important it is to have working smoke alarms.
The displaced people are being sheltered by the Red Cross and family and friends, say fire officials.
