Grant County Sheriff's Department said a 44-year-old Soap Lake man was arrested Monday after allegedly trying to burn down the home of his estranged wife. Arkady P. Stoyan allegedly entered his estranged wife’s home in the 3600 block of Road 20 Northeast around 7 p.m. and tried to set the house on fire. He was confronted by his brother-in-law who had stopped to check the home at the request of Stoyan’s estranged wife who was not home at the time. When confronted, Stoyan armed himself with a knife and a pizza cutter and allegedly threatened his brother-in-law. Deputies arrived and learned Stoyan’s estranged wife had a protection order against him, and that Stoyan’s presence at the home violated that order. When deputies attempted to place Stoyan into custody, he fought with deputies. Stoyan struck his head several times against a patrol car. Stoyan also tried to strike his own head on the pavement. Deputies were able to restrain Stoyan and prevent him from causing further harm to himself. Stoyan was taken by ambulance to Columbia Basin Hospital where he was treated, released and then booked into the Grant County Jail. The patrol car sustained about $1,000 in damage. Stoyan is jailed on suspicion of attempted first degree arson, first degree burglary, second degree malicious mischief, harassment, and violation of a protection order.
