(VIDEO) Governor Inslee declared a State of Emergency Wednesday after extreme flooding caused some evacuations in the Nile area and White Pass was closed due to several mudslides. In the Nile area homeowners are dealing with rushing water and damaged homes from the overflowing Naches River. "Elk Valley Lane had about 18 inches of water at its deepest, homes were surrounded, people were still asleep," Nile Fire Chief Steve Smith said about their experience evacuating homes early Wednesday morning. The water was rising quickly according to Chief Smith who said, "By the time we drove down the lane and then back again it had risen another 4 inches." Now Elk Valley Lane and several other roads near it aren't even passable, but their may be some relief in the forecast for Nile residents. "The snow level is going to drop down to about 2,000 feet over the weekend, which will help us, but it may not help those in Yakima or the Lower Valley," Chief Smith told us. He says some homeowners are beginning to return home as the water slowly recedes, but there is still a chance other areas will see more flooding and road closures according to the Department of Transportation. "We do have concerns that moisture in the forecast will continue to soften the soil and cause further damage," WSDOT Communications Director, Summer Derrey, said. In fact White Pass is already closed, two mudslides and one rock slide this week have completely shut down entrances on the East and West sides of the summit. "It is a 30 mile stretch, so we need to take our time and look at every area very diligently," Derrey said.
