Lieutenant Nate Hawley and Paramedic Amanda Austin of Spokane County Fire District 8 were awarded with Spokane County EMS and Trauma Care Council's EMS Hero awards on Tuesday. They were nominated and awarded for their flawless response to the Freeman High School shooting on Sept. 13 of last year. Hawley and Austin were the first two medics onto the second floor of the school where a gunman opened fire, killing one and injuring three others. The entire district also received an award at Tuesday's ceremony for Excellence in EMS.
