The Nisqually John Fire, sparked Wednesday afternoon along the Snake River in southern Whitman County, is 100 percent contained and fire officials say evidence shows it was likely human-caused. The wildfire, which burned near Nisqually John Landing in the Snake River Canyon for more than three days, was first reported just after noon Wednesday — the Fourth of July. The fire is believed to have started just off Wawawai Road, at the bottom of the canyon, but raced through acres of dry grassland and climbed the steep rocky hillsides, making it difficult for firefighters to tackle the blaze on foot. At its peak, some 130 firefighters from throughout the state and at least four aircraft battled the blaze, which is expected to have charred an estimated 1,350 acres. No structures were burned by the fire and it appears there was no significant crop loss. Whitman County Fire District 14 Chief Jon Dahmen said damage to structures was never a huge concern since homes were not close to the blaze.
