Firefighters were called to the Bowl and Pitcher area in Riverside State Park Tuesday afternoon for a reported water rescue.
Brian Schaeffer with the Spokane Fire Department says two boats were involved in a collision on the Spokane River. One boat capsized and 12 people were thrown into the river. Two people were seriously injured and rescued by bystanders. A third, a woman who has not been identified, was pulled by the current about three-quarters of a mile down the river from where she fell in. Schaeffer reports that woman died Tuesday.
The family involved in the crash were visiting from Colorado and were on a guided rafting trip.
The two injured people were described as in stable, but concerning condition. They were taken to Deaconess hospital for treatment.
"It's going to be a tough holiday for this family and all of the rescuers," Schaeffer said.
