When Kristie Worthey heard the explosion Monday afternoon she and her neighbors rushed outside. They were met with ash and smoke from the hillside behind their building, which houses condos and apartments. “Within five minutes the flames started coming up and you could see the flames coming all the way up our trees,” Worthey said. “A couple of our neighbors ran and grabbed hoses and started spraying our fence, which I think kind of slowed down the progress because it was very close to the apartment building.” Tacoma Fire Battalion Chief Chris Brink said they were called to the 1000 block of South 28th Street just before 2. The fire and explosion started across the street from a Department of Corrections (DOC) office.
