A young child was killed in a fire that broke out in an Auburn apartment building early Wednesday morning. Firefighters were called to the Clearwater Ridge Apartments in the 3700 block of Auburn Way S. just after 3 a.m. after reports of smoke and flames coming from the top floor. "I heard (a neighbor) scream so I ran to his house and he was saying that there was a baby in there," Antoine Jones said through tears. "I tried to run up there, but couldn't get it. You could hear her crying; I thought it was one of the kids outside." Crews were able to confine the fire to just the one unit, but upon entering the apartment, firefighters found a 2-year-old girl had not survived. Her father and two other children inside, ages 6 and 7, were able to get out safely. The girls alerted the father when they heard the smoke alarm sounding, fire officials said.
