A large waterfront home was destroyed by a two-alarm fire Wednesday morning near Gig Harbor, emergency officials said. Firefighters rushed to the scene, in the 7700 block of Olympic View Drive NW, at about 3:45 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames billowing from the 5,000-square-foot home. There were no hydrants at the scene, so a fireboat and water tenders were brought in to battle the blaze. Ultimately, the home was completely gutted by the flames. Crews remained at the scene, dousing hot spots as smoke continued to rise from the blackened remains of the home. Neighbors say the house was unoccupied, but crews have only done a partial search so far. The cause of the fire is unknown. There were unconfirmed reports that it started in the garage and that explosions were heard. Gig Harbor firefighters were assisted in their response by crews from West Pierce Fire and Rescue, Key Peninsula, South Kitsap and Tacoma Fire Department.
