Property owners at 100 Fernwood Lane have been cited for reckless burning in the second degree following a controlled burn that spread into brush and trees and required a response from Clallam District 2 firefighters at 4:52 p.m. Wednesday. Assistant Chief Mike DeRousie reported that District 2 Fire-Rescue responded with 12 firefighters, a fast-attack brush rig, two fire engines, a 3,000-gallon water tender and a medic unit. Maps show that 100 Fernwood Lane is located at Fernwood and Brown roads, about two blocks from Monroe Road. The property is also close to Ennis Creek. The fire grew to two separate fires, said DeRousie in a news release. One fire was approximately 50 feet by 50 feet; the second was approximately 75 feet wide by 199 feet in length. Firefighters used about 4,250 gallons of water and five gallons of foam to extinguish the two blazes. DeRousie said the Fernwood Lane incident was the second wildland fire in less than a week. The first was last Saturday at 5:46 p.m., said the assistant chief. Unknown persons are believed to have built a beach fire at the end of Charles Road, north of Lower Elwha Road. The fire had been put out but high winds that evening reignited it. The Charles Road fire burned a path 10 feet wide by 500 feet long before it was extinguished.
