A fire early Tuesday severely damaged a house that is more than 100 years old, destroyed a garage and charred a neighboring garage. At about 1:30 a.m., South Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews were sent to the 700 block of Kitsap Street. They found an older two-story, daylight-basement home ablaze. A passer-by on Bay Street had seen the flames and rousted the three adult occupants. Firefighters initially battled the fire from the outside, SK Deputy Chief Guy Dalrymple said. With three floors on fire, firefighters called a second alarm and went inside when more manpower arrived. Units responded from Central Kitsap, Bremerton and Navy Region Northwest. They had the fire under control in about 45 minutes, doused the major hot spots in the next hour and mopped up until about 6 a.m., Dalrymple said. The fire is believed to have started in the garage, spread to the neighbor's garage and breached the outside of the 5,000-square-foot house, which was built in 1902, said Deputy Fire Marshal Jackie Blackwood of the Kitsap County Fire Marshal's Office. She's investigating the cause. Nobody suffered injuries serious enough to be taken to the hospital. "It was a lot of fire to get out," Dalrymple said. "It was a three-story fire on the inside. We had to fight aggressively but cautiously."
