A much-needed grant for the Pullman Fire Department. KLEW News Palouse Bureau Chief, Alex Crescenti explains why. Fire officials tell me they are excited about receiving this grant which will go toward equipment used to battle fires. “This is what they look like and then these are the bottle that they go inside,” said Chief Mike Heston, Pullman Fire Department. For Pullman Fire Chief Mike Heston much of the equipment they are working with is now considered to be outdated. “Our apparatus was coming up on 15-years-old and then we also applied for new radios because our radios were getting older and the new digital technologies out there helps us get better reception,” said Chief Heston. The fire department just received a grant from FEMA. It has an estimated worth of three quarters of a million dollars. Chief Heston said this new equipment will help firefighters communicate better and keep them safe in the process. “Radios and breathing apparatus are the two most important tools that a firefighter can have for safety,” said Chief Heston.
