The Halfway Fire burning west of Naches since last week is in a mop up phase with about 90 percent considered contained, the Naches Ranger District reported this morning.
The remaining 10 percent of the unlined fire is located in an inaccessible location on the lower northwest flank of the fire above Halfway Campground, according to a news release issued by the ranger district.
“Smoke and isolated flames may be visible from this area until rains cool hot spots in this inaccessible area,” the district said.
About 34 firefighters and support staff remain on the fire, down from more than 240 earlier. The fire was first reported Aug. 1. Halfway Flat and Sawmill Flat Campgrounds, Boulder Cave, Boulder Cave Trail and Road No. 1704 remain closed to the public. The closed area extends to the area where the fire has burned, where fire-weakened trees continue to fall without warning, the district said.
