An elderly woman died Wednesday in an apartment fire in Lakewood, officials said. Crews from West Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to the scene at about noon after receiving a report of smoke and flames coming from a unit in the apartment building. An elderly woman was found in the room where the blaze started. Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the room, but were unable to revive the woman found there. Another person who lives in the unit was found alive and uninjured. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
