Five people were injured Monday evening when a fire broke out inside a Capitol Hill apartment building. The fire started sometime after 5: 30 p.m. on the first floor of an apartment building in the 1500 block of Boylston Avenue East. Seattle firefighters arrived on scene moments later and quickly began rescuing occupants and putting water on the blaze. Four people were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Another resident was injured when she jumped from the building onto the roof of a neighboring building, according to Lt. Harold Webb with the Seattle Fire Department. A woman who says she was in the building when the fire started said she had to rush out to avoid the flames. "They pounded on my door. I'm right next door. I opened the door and there was black smoke from the ceiling all the way down to the floor, and I took off running. I saw fire. It was just a big ball of fire," the woman said. It's unclear what sparked the fire or how much damage was done to the building. None of the 40 residents will be able to return to the apartment on Monday. Red Cross representatives are on scene helping the residents find temporary housing. Traffic on East Pine between Belmont Avenue and Harvard Avenue was blocked to traffic as crews fought the fire. A portion of westbound East Pike was also blocked to traffic, according to the Seattle Department of transportation.
