The Okanogan Complex became the worst wildfire in state history this summer, surpassing the Carlton Complex that destroyed 256,000 acres and 357 buildings in 2014. Crews said this year is worse because of the loss of three of their colleagues. Three firefighters were killed while working on the Twisp River Fire, a part of the Okanogan Complex. Four other firefighters were injured battling that fire as well. The Okanogan Complex has burned through more than 280,000 acres as of Wednesday and is still growing. It is burning in the same area ravaged by the Carlton Complex in 2014. "It's unbelievable, not again," said Kim Maltais, a Okanogan County resident who lost everything in the Carlton Complex. But while the losses are greater, residents of Okanogan County said the firefighting efforts have improved from 2014. "I think the only benefit that came out of our fiasco is that they are fighting fires now. They're actually aggressively attacking fires," said Maltais.
