When Lorisa Campbell ordered pizza from Domino’s Wednesday evening, she never expected the delivery she got. At her front door was not only a pizza delivery man, but also members of the West Valley Fire Department delivering her pizza. “My husband came running in saying the pizza is here, but there’s policemen with them or something," said Campbell. "So I was like what?" Campbell and two other households received surprise visits from the West Valley Fire firefighters, who performed checks on smoke detectors as part of fire prevention week. Yakima's Domino's located on 420 S. 72nd Avenue and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) teamed up with the fire department to promote fire safety. Anyone who ordered a pizza was randomly selected and surprised by fire crews. If the smoke alarms in their home were working the pizza was free. If the smore alarms were not working fire crew members offered to replace them with new ones. Campbell got her pizza for free. “Well it’s a win win situation for us because apparently it isn’t working," she said. Although the event is originally a national partnership between the NFPA's and the restaurant, firefighters in West Valley also started the initiative for other reasons. “I believe it was in 2012 we had a structure fire in the south area of West Valley," said Lt., Cameron Haubrich. "Unfortunately it resulted in a fatality, the individual was sleeping and therefore didn’t realize his residence was on fire.”
