Fire officials are crediting a smoke alarm with helping save a mom and her toddler son from a burning home in Poulsbo Monday morning.
The 25-year-old woman says as the alarm began to blare, she noticed smoke and flames coming from the basement.
"I went downstairs to investigate and noticed flames coming from a wall, up near the ceiling," the woman told Poulsbo Fire officials.
She grabbed her 2-year-old son and got out of her home on Rova Road, then called 911. Firefighters arrived minutes later and doused the flames.
But the home has sustained significant damage and the Red Cross is helping the family of four with temporary shelter. The father was at work and their 4-year-old son was in preschool.
The couple had just bought the home in the spring, but was insured, fire officials said.
Investigators are still looking into what started the fire.
