Crews battled two fires Tuesday as high winds kicked up, according to firefighters. Yakima County Captain Dave Martin said crews battled a 40-acre fast moving brush fire in the 400 block of Coe Road west of Wapato around noon Tuesday. Martin said the fire at Coe Road had flames that reached up to 15 and 20 feet, and the high winds were helping to spread it. Flames also enveloped much of the road, and visibility made the fire fight difficult. Flames spread over to a structure and caused minimal damage to the home's roof. The cause of the fire is still being investigated but crews believed the fire started from an unattended burn pit that someone attempted to cover with dirt. In total the Coe Road fire damaged three power poles and approximately 40 wooden fence posts, according to Martin. A second fire was reported in the 10000 block of McDonald Road in Harrah while crews were still battling the 40-acre brush fire west of Wapato. Martin said a half acre brush fire burned several cars that were left abandoned in the area. No one was injured in either fire Tuesday. Fire officials estimate about $45,000 of damage was caused by the flames.
