A Heiskell family said "God woke them up" after they safely escaped a house fire overnight, according to Rural Metro.
Firefighters responded shortly after midnight Friday to 9518 Depot Road in North Knox County to find heavy flames on the back porch and extending into the attic, Rural Metro spokesman Jeff Bagwell said.
The residents were evacuating as fire crews arrived at the scene. The home was equipped with smoke detectors, which operated properly, Bagwell noted.
Fire crews brought the flames under control before the fire gutted the ground floor. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
