VIDEO: Local first responders in Connecticut shed light on the technology utilized by emergency crews in Baltimore to search for missing individuals following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge.
In Branford, Deputy Fire Chief Mike Stackpole showed News 8 a critical tool crews use for water rescues on its boats, called sonar.
“Before this technology, we would only be able to see what’s on the surface of the water so we would look for boat parts, car parts, whatever we were looking for floating or people, but now we can see underwater as well,” Stackpole said.
Stackpole emphasized the effectiveness of sonar, which his department has been using for about five years, in generating imagery by interpreting soundwaves bounced back from underwater objects.
