A house fire in Hartford Monday sent a resident fleeing down a fire escape and sparked an evacuation at a nearby school. There are no reports of injuries.
The fire at 49 Sisson Ave. started late Monday morning and was out by 12:15 p.m. The two-family house is near Cherry Street.
Streets in the area were closed, and the nearby Parkville Community School was evacuated. Students and staff went to Our Lady of Sorrow Church, said school system spokesman John Fergus. The school dismissed students at 1 p.m.
“There was smoke that was coming into the school,” Fergus said.
Taylor Spyke, who lives on the top floor of the three-story home, said, “I smelled smoke and thought, ‘What the hell’s going on?" The handle of his front door was warm to the touch, he said, and “that’s when I knew that it was severe.”
