Firefighters continue to battle a grass fire burning near one of Fort Carson’s training areas.
Previously estimated at 150 acres Tuesday, the Mountain Post said Wednesday the blaze had exploded to 1,450 acres as of Wednesday morning. Firefighters from several agencies have brought it to 20 percent containment.
According to Fort Carson officials, the training area is about 10 miles south of the main post. Crews on scene Tuesday afternoon included units from Fort Carson, Hanover, Security, Shriever Air Force Base, Colorado Springs Utilities and Fort Carson’s Directorate of Public Works. The fire started Monday afternoon.
Officials said to expect to see heavy smoke in the area as the fire fight continues.
