Lucy Demaris has been a volunteer with the American Red Cross for four years. She was leaving her house, located along Highway 299 halfway between Weaverville and Helena, for Oroville Wednesday to help victims of the Ponderosa Fire. As she was leaving, she realized the flames were getting closer from the Helena Fire. She knew when she left, she may not be coming back. "I feel like a super person because I drove through the flames on the way out," Demaris said. As she was driving to Oroville, she got a call requesting her to start a shelter in Weaverville for the Helena Fire, instead. Since that day, she has worked every night from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. helping those at the shelter. She later got the news that her house didn't survive the flames. There is nothing left of the home she'd lived in for 11 years.
