From the Central Coast to the Sierra Nevada foothills, spring winds have dried timber and brush after a historically wet winter that isn’t expected to relieve the 2017 wildfire threat, a Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit official said. Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday proclaimed Wildfire Awareness Week, citing a rise in dangerous wildfires in recent years. Wildfires are getting hotter, bigger and more destructive. Half of the state’s largest wildfires, which have burned more than million acres, have been during the last decade, according to Cal Fire.
