VIDEO: Firefighters in Avondale were kept busy early Wednesday after an intense blaze at a church. Fire crews tell Arizona’s Family that they were called out to the St. William Catholic Church, located west of 107th Avenue and Buckeye Road around 1 a.m.
When they arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames billowing out from the north side of the building which quickly spread to the south, prompting fire officials to call a second-alarm. Dozens of firefighters from Phoenix, Glendale, Avondale, Tolleson, and Goodyear were called to assist and while battling the blaze, firefighters say the roof collapsed. At this time, it’s unclear if anyone was injured. However, the church has been declared a total loss.
The fire remains under investigation.
