VIDEO: Rio Rico Fire District hosted a training program to help prepare firefighters in battling propane fires. They conducted a night time training session with 20 foot tall flames coming from a propane tank. Propane is a nontoxic, colorless and odorless gas that is stored in liquid. It may also be known as liquefied petroleum gas and is used for home applications such as cooking and space heating. Propane use in residential areas is very common and gas leaks, a clogged burner, or a natural disaster can quickly become a problem. Because propane is dense air, if you have a leak, it will settle on the floor in areas that are not properly ventilated. Any ignition source could cause an explosion such as the switch of a light. The training firefighters received helps prepare them to act fast and know which tactics to use if a propane tank goes up in flames.
