A new bill named in honor of the Helena police chief’s son will make sensory training mandatory for all fire and EMS personnel in Alabama.
Governor Ivey has signed House Bill 126, also known as The Abram Colin Act.
Chief Brad Flynn said he is a proud supporter of this bill named after his son Colin, who has sensory needs.
Chief Flynn said this will ensure that all first responders are equipped to offer the same level of respect and compassion to people with invisible disabilities. House Bill 126 will include the exact same training in sensory awareness and inclusion that law enforcement is required to do in the state.
“1 in 4 individuals has some kind of sensory need and when you have a community growing as quickly as Helena with almost 26,000 people, that’s a lot of individuals that are going to expect a higher level of service,” Flynn said.
