Growing eruptions in the Big Island's Leilani Estates on Sunday night prompted officials to issue an emergency alert urging any residents remaining in the lava-ravaged subdivision to "go now" and stoking fears that the toll of homes claimed by lava — at 26 so far — would undoubtedly grow. The alert went out to smartphones across the Big Island at 7 p.m. on Sunday, urging residents in Leilani Estates to leave immediately. Residents were allowed to briefly return to the subdivision Sunday, where at least 10 eruptions scattered across the community — one of which sent lava fountains soaring as high as 230 feet in the air over the weekend — have destroyed at least 31 structures, including 26 homes.
