The widow of a retired borough firefighter who was killed in a 2015 hit-and-run accident in front of the Lincoln Hose Fire Co. 4's firehouse has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in hopes it will aid the investigation. Anita Kavanaugh, the widow of George R. Kavanaugh, filed the lawsuit in Somerset County Superior Court on July 20 seeking unspecified damages. "Our goal isn't monetary," said attorney Steven Benvenisti, who represents Anita Kavanaugh. "Our goal is to find out who killed George Kavanaugh. By filing this lawsuit, any witnesses who testify will do so under oath and be subject to perjury if they lie." George Kavanaugh was killed on March 6, 2015. The lawsuit lists a number of entities, including the county, borough and fire company, as well as individuals and corporations, both named and unnamed, as defendants. Benvenisti, a Teaneck-based victim's rights attorney with the firm of Davis, Saperstein & Salomon, said he's hopeful the testimony can help in the ongoing criminal investigation. Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Public Information Officer Jack Bennett said he could not comment on the criminal investigation.
