Crews battled a large structure fire near the Loop 101 and Tatum Boulevard in Phoenix early Tuesday morning.
The second-alarm fire started around 3:30 a.m. at a hotel under construction behind a Holiday Inn Express. Eighty firefighters were working the fire.
The glow of the fire could be seen for miles.
It took crews about two hours to put out the blaze, but some debris was still smoldering and there were several pop-up fires in the nearby brush.
"We had firefighters and actually PD officers that grabbed some water cans and actually put out some of those hot spots all around in the brush," said Capt. Ardell Deliz with the Phoenix Fire Department.
The elevator shafts are the only things left standing at the hotel construction site. The framing was supposed to be finished in two weeks.
"It was just devastating to see the thing all the way to the ground," said Steve Wilson, project manager of the framing. "We were scheduled to be done on the 15th of August."
