Sheriff Steve Loftis said a driver who ran over a Greenville County deputy, hit and killed a motorcyclist after deputies ended a "wild high speed chase" Thursday on US 25 north of Travelers Rest.
Lieutenant Ty Miller said deputies responded to investigate a possible stolen vehicle at TD's gas station on SC 253.
When a deputy attempted to make contact with a driver of a vehicle at the gas station, Miller said the driver ran over the deputy.
Loftis said the deputy fired shots through the windshield of the truck as it barreled toward him.
A second deputy at the scene pursued the suspect who fled the gas station.
The deputy lost sight of the truck and another deputy caught sight of the vehicle on Poinsett Highway, where the chase continued, Loftis said.
The chase continued onto US 25 North past Travelers Rest.
Loftis said deputies ended the chase after the driver of the truck crossed into the southbound lane and continued speeding in the wrong lane.
About three-quarters of a mile from where the chase ended, Loftis said the driver of the pickup crashed into an oncoming motorcycle near Old Buncombe Road.
The motorcyclist was killed in the crash. The motorcyclist has been identified as Jordan Barry Howard, 30, of Marietta, according to Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans.
Howard was a headed to work at North Greenville Fire Department where he served as a lieutenant.
