Isle of Palms officials: Education, preparation key to upcoming hurricane season

VIDEO: Isle of Palms is hosting a hurricane expo to ensure the community is ready for this year’s hurricane season. The Isle of Palms fire department, police department, city officials and several community partners will gather to educate the community on preparing for a hurricane and to provide resources. This event is not just for the residents of Isle of Palms, but for anyone who wants guidance on what to do during and after a storm. The Weather Channel is predicting the 2024 Hurricane Season to be one of the most active on record. Hurricane season begins on June 1 and Lowcountry agencies are working hard to get everyone prepared before it is too late. IOP Fire Marshal Sean Harshaw and IOP Police spokesman Sgt. Matt Storen emphasize that many residents in the Tri-County area are not originally from the area and have not yet experienced a Lowcountry hurricane season.

More than 20 displaced in downtown Charleston fire

A fire in downtown Charleston Sunday afternoon displaced more than a dozen residents. The Charleston Fire Department responded to Radcliffe Street just before 4 p.m. Sunday to a three-story, multi-family home. Arriving firefighters said they did not see smoke or fire initially but smoke started to be seen outside the home. Crews found fire inside the void and attic spaces in the building. Residents told investigators they saw a possible lightning strike before seeing smoke and fire in the building. A resident in the building was able to warn the others inside and tried to use a fire extinguisher to control the fire. In all, 22 people were displaced from the eight units in the building. Three cats and two dogs were found unharmed. No injuries were reported.
