Fire in Canton leaves 2 homeless, kills several pets

PHOTOS: Two people are homeless after a fire destroyed their town of Canton house. Volunteers from several departments were called to 796 Sykes Road at around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. When they arrived, Morley Fire Chief Wayne Morrison said they saw smoke coming from under the roof of the house. He said once firefighters entered the home, the blaze started burning out of control. Volunteers battled the flames for more than 6 hours before putting out the fire. Morrison said the people who live there weren’t home when the blaze broke out. Several pets inside the house were killed, he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials think it started in the living room, according to Morrison. Firefighters from Canton, West Potsdam, Madrid and Rensselaer Falls helped Morley firefighters battle the blaze.

Police: Man pulled from Ossining house fire dies at hospital

A man pulled from a house fire in Ossining by first responders died after arriving at Phelps Hospital, police say. A 911 call around 1 p.m. reported the fire at 336 Spring St. Fire crews gave the unnamed victim CPR before he was transported to the hospital in Sleepy Hollow. Police say the man appeared to be in his 30s and was the only one inside the house at the time. Fire officials said that the second floor of the home, where the victim was found was heavily cluttered and presented a challenge to rescuers. The house on Spring Street is being treated as a crime scene but authorities say there is no reason to believe the fire was suspicious. In addition to the Ossining Fire Department, crews from Tarrytown, Croton-on-Hudson, Millwood and Thornwood assisted during the incident.
