Clinton Fire Department names new chief


The city of Clinton on Tuesday announced the appointment of Clinton Fire Department (CFD) Battalion Chief Mike McQuistion to serve as the new Fire Chief. Chief McQuistion will become the 12th overall Fire Chief during the 134-year history of the Clinton Fire Department. Mayor Maddasion will administer the oath of office to McQuistion at the May 28, 2024 Council meeting. As Fire Chief, McQuistion will oversee 50 full-time firefighters, and five Building and Neighborhood Service (BNS) employees, along with an annual department budget of $6.5 million. Chief McQuistion, born and raised in the Clinton area, began his career with CFD as a firefighter paramedic and has risen through the ranks over the last 25 years, serving in a wide range of areas: Engineer, Lieutenant and currently Battalion Chief, according to a city release Tuesday.

House is a total loss after a fire in Sloan


VIDEO: A house in Woodbury County is a total loss after a fire on Wednesday, May 8. The fire was reported at around 3 p.m. at 423 4th Street in Sloan, which is located in the middle of the town. Firefighters at the scene say crews from Sloan, Hornick, Salix and Woodbury County Emergency Management were brought in to contain the fire. Crews were at the scene for several hours making sure the flames were under control. The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office was also called in for traffic control. The house was destroyed, but no one was inside at the time of the fire. The cause is still under investigation, but the initial investigation suggests the fire started in the kitchen.

Three pets killed, two people left displaced after a house fire in Robins


Three pets have died and two people are displaced after a house fire that happened on Tuesday night in Robins. Around 11:15 p.m. multiple agencies were called to the 400 block of Beverly Road to a report of a house fire. Officials say the two family members who were inside the home at the time were able to get out safely, unfortunately three of the family pets died in the fire. The fire displaced the family and The Red Cross was called in to help assist them. No injuries were reported, but the house is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Woman severely burned when her tent caught fire in Des Moines


A woman suffered multiple severe burns to one-third of her body Monday morning after the tent she was staying in caught fire. According to the Des Moines Fire Department, the woman was staying in a tent in a homeless camp off Harriet Street when her heater caught the tent on fire. She showed up at the fire station around 9 a.m. Monday covered in first- and second-degree burns. The woman was later taken to the hospital for treatment. Crews are still looking into where and how the fire started.

Clarke County cafe catches fire


A cafe in the Clarke County town of Woodburn was heavily damaged following a fire Tuesday afternoon. The Clarke County sheriff told KCCI that the fire started at around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday. He said the building next door had storm damage, and the owner was burning debris when the fire spread to the cafe. "What I was told by the owner that was burning the building, it was damaged last night," said Clarke County Sheriff Rob Kovacevich. "A wall had fallen down and he thought he could burn that wall down and pick up the debris and burn it to waste and the brick wall fell." The wall fell onto the cafe, causing the fire to spread. Thankfully, no one was hurt or inside the building. Kovacevich told KCCI that three fire departments responded: Osceola, Weldon, and Woodburn. The Clarke County Emergency Response Team also responded.

Dubuque Fire Department responds to house fire started by lightning


The Dubuque Fire Department responded to a house fire after it was struck by lightning early Tuesday morning. Around 5:00 a.m., the Dubuque Emergency Communications Center received a call to a report of a fire inside of home at the 600 block of Florence Street that was started after it was struck by lightning. There were 14 total firefighters that were brought to the scene. When the first unit arrived on scene they noticed a visible fire showing from the top of the home and started to apply water directly to the fire. Crews entered the home with a hose line and helped with assisting any hot spots and clearing smoke from the home. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature due to the lightning strike. The home is considered to be habitable and all 5 of the occupants were able to return back to the home. No injuries were reported.
