2024 graduates present bronze statue to Dothan Fire Department

VIDEO: Dothan High School’s Class of 2024 is recognizing the work of the Dothan Fire Department. The graduates decided to commemorate DFD by gifting them a special token of appreciation—a bronze statue. Located at the Central fire station on Columbia Highway, the bronze firefighter crafted by The Bronze Depot acts as a tribute to all who serve this department, recognizing their bravery and service to the area. ”We are so appreciative as students to everyone that helps in our community and we know the hard work that it takes to do this. Not everyone is capable, mentally and physically, to do this every day,” Connor Cody, the Dothan High School student section leader, said. It also honors the two firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in this department.

Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue to begin giving blood to badly injured patients prehospital

Responders with the Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue service will soon begin administering blood products to people who are critically injured before they go to a hospital. A spokesperson for the fire department said Wednesday that research shows the sooner severely hurt trauma patients who have lost blood receive these treatments, the better their chance of survival. "Until now, the temperature and shelf-life requirements of blood products have made it impossible for Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue to deliver them in the field," TFR spokeswoman Holly Whigham said. "However, recent purchases of specialized storage and administration equipment have allowed the department to set up five Advanced Life Support units with the capability of administering blood products at the scene of an emergency or while on the way to the hospital," she said.

First responders and students in Shelby County honor public service teacher

VIDEO: Several Shelby County firefighters and police officers gathered Tuesday at the Career Technical Education Center in Columbiana to honor their former teacher, Gary Griff (Griffith). Griff is retiring and these first responders say he changed lives during his decades in the classroom. Coach Griff has taught over 100 students that have either gone on to become firefighters, police officers or work in the military. Columbiana Police Officer Zales says, “Congratulations coach, enjoy your retirement. We are going to miss you.” Griff has made a lasting impact on hundreds of students, many of them coming back this week to wish him a happy retirement. Saginaw Fire Chief Jonathan Hensley says, “He will still keep up with us, and you know see all the improvements and things we’ve done in our lives but actually giving us the chance to come back and pass on the knowledge we’ve obtained to these future firefighters is a major thing.”
