VIDEO: A local police chief is being credited for saving people from a burning home Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded to a house fire in the Village of Elk Mound just after 2:30 p.m. The fire burned through the roof of an attached garage on Juniper Avenue. According to the Elk Mound Assistant Fire Chief Larry Zais, two people and multiple pets were still inside the home when the fire started and were able to get out thanks to local law enforcement. “One person was still sleeping, the other in the basement, so they didn’t hear the smoke detectors. Fortunate that a village employee noticed. They contacted the chief who kicked doors in to alert the people inside. If it wasn’t for him, they wouldn’t have gotten out at all,” said Zais. Zais said the cause of the fire is still unknown. The house is deemed a total loss and may need to be torn down.
