With the new school year underway, the state fire marshal's office is asking educators and parents to teach children... about fire safety and responsibilities in the event of a fire. The State Fire Marshal's Office says almost eight percent of fire-related deaths involved children under 10-years-old. Today they are suggesting tips to teach children regarding fire safety. "The big message is keep matches away, teach your children about what fire can do, about smoke alarms, and keep that 3-foot radius away from anything that's hot," said Gregory Baruso, the chief deputy state fire marshal. Others include discussing when to call 9-1-1 and what to provide and demonstrate how to stop, drop, and roll for children first grade or higher if their clothes catch fire. They say it's vital for kids to recognize fire hazards and know how to respond in an emergency.
